Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Executive Director for Marketing and Communications is the second senior most position in the department, directly managing the operations of the department. The Executive Director monitors the daily work flow and evaluates results to ensure that departmental objectives are met. The Executive Director helps plan and direct the work of the Marketing and Communications staff and is responsible for ensuring that staff meet their performance and professional development goals.

Essential Functions

1. Assists in developing the department’s strategic plan, including helping with setting goals and objectives for each area of the department (marketing, digital, internal communications, media relations, and creative team) and helping establish plans for achieving those objectives.
2. Provides day-to-day operational leadership of the department, overseeing projects and ensuring deadlines are met, managing staff schedules, and facilitating communication among and between teams.
3. Develops, implements and manages a quality assurance program for the department, ensuring all projects meet the highest standards of industry best practices.
4. Anticipates the needs of the AVP and tracks priorities for the AVP and assists in managing progress towards goals.
5. Helps determine which projects are completed internally and externally and manages the use of external resources (vendors, freelancers, contract employees and temps). Oversees performance standards for vendors.
6. Conducts research on a variety of topics in support of AVP’s reports, presentations and proposals.
7. Provides significant input into (and may occasionally lead) the selection, promotion and compensation recommendations of Marketing and Communications staff.
8. Oversees administration of the department’s budget, ensuring expenditures are on target; assists in the development of the annual budget plan.
9. Serves on various university committees as department representative.
10. Serves as one of the lead back-ups to AVP, attends meetings on behalf of AVP when requested and takes responsibility for follow-up when assigned or instructed.
11. Drives continual process improvements and implements best practices in the department to manage projects efficiently; develops metrics to determine success.
12. Keeps abreast of industry trends in all areas of Marketing and Communications and makes recommendations that will help improve and enhance team’s effectiveness.
13. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience/Certifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, communications, management or related field.
• Ten (10) years of experience managing a team in a fast-paced setting such as marketing, public relations, advertising, communications or similar field.

Preferred Qualifications

Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:
• Experience in an agency, higher education, education, academic or non-profit setting highly desired.
• Excellent management skills; experience leading and motivating diverse teams.
• Strong communicator who can articulate complex concepts to a broad range of people; outstanding writing and presentation skills.
• Must work effectively and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, comfortably managing multiple priorities while maintaining adherence to deadlines and budgets.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound professional judgment in the performance of areas of responsibilities.
• Demonstrated experience working in complex, matrixed organizations.
• Demonstrated ability to cultivate strong relationships with senior leaders, faculty, faculty leaders and staff.
• Demonstrated ability and maturity to work with ambiguity and use discretion.
• Excellent customer service skills with focus on exceptional follow-through.
• Proficient in all Microsoft and Adobe products; CRM experience very helpful.
• Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.

Requires long periods of sitting and work at computer keyboard using repetitive hand and wrist action. Occasional walking, standing, and infrequent stooping, bending, kneeling and reaching above head. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
